Carbon-14 testing has been used by several industries for decades (e.g. flavors and fragrance, food and beverage, cosmetics, bioplastics, biofuels, waste-to-energy, archaeology, and geology sectors). Carbon-14 is standardized through several analytical methods such as ASTM D6866, ISO 16620, and EN 16640. This test method is used to differentiate between naturally sourced and petrochemical-derived ingredients. Stakeholders throughout the supply chain can use carbon-14 testing to authenticate natural ingredients and to back up natural source claims on product labels.
